Statement of Intent

For my magazine front/content pages I will use media language to create a brand identity of modern views on gender to appeal to the target demographic of readers in the millennial generation, 15-30 demographic, this will reflect the industry context desired by Bauer Media – this is a magazine which is innovative and modern, highlighting inclusivity and community. As my plan is to portray ‘Gender Performance’ whilst adhering to budget fashion, taking inspiration from theorist Judith Butler, I need to ensure that the magazine follows Bauer Media’s conglomerate publishing, so to do this I will be keeping to a basic tonal pallet (appropriate for a unisex approach) on both front covers with accents of colours to heighten ambiguity and rid of stereotypical approaches. The main cover images will be sat on a grey bed peering out of a window, using two female models (each one on separate covers). In terms of representation one cover will feature my youngest female model presenting a more masculine ‘performance’ to align with Judith Butler’s theory, resonating with the ages of 18-20. This theory consists of gender being a variable people are able to manipulate to however they wish, as actors may do in a performance, suggesting that once the performance is over gender no longer exists. My other cover will feature the older of my two female models as a more feminine presentation to reflect the stereotypical perceptions of gender, fitting to the same demographic of 18-20. Both models will peer out of the window to show reflections in a dream like state, also highlighting a common theme of angst, which often connotates with Teenagers. This is both relatable and new to the target audience as this movement of ‘gender performance’ is fairly new, allowing those apart of it to feel recognised and to educate the other. The cover lines will relate to articles regarding fashion and current events, reinforcing both consumerist messages and constructing a bridge for target audiences to understand current affairs, understanding the world they’re immersed in. My intention is to awaken audiences to the society of innovation –which I personally believe we are in. Most media coverage on topics such these are largely negative whereas I wish to present the fluidity and normality of this. The contents pages will include conventional sections for the average reader such as fashion, health and travel. Including educational and career articles. The layout and design of both magazines with reinforce the house style of the front cover, using a grey tonal background and sans-serif font. One example of a potential feature article found on the contents page will focus on a young internet influencer who I will construct as a happy, comfortable, fluid individual who highlights the minorities in gender performance.
